2009 Intro - Thomas Robinson

Without fail, somebody always comes from off of the radar and bursts onto the scene as a top player. This year, Thomas Robinson is that guy. After a strong showing at the Reebok All-American camp in Philly during the first part of the month, the 6-9 forward from Wolfeboro (NH) Brewster Prep has continued to ascend up the rankings with great play in Las Vegas at the Main Event tourney.

Given how quickly he’s burst onto the scene, the Washington (DC) area native really hasn’t had much time to sort things out.

“To tell you the truth everybody that has been recruiting me has either been a couple days apart or in like the last week or so,” said Robinson. “They are just starting to get to know me and I’m sorting it all out.”

An athletic interior player who has a great first step, huge hands and a non-stop motor, his play has turned him into the hottest recruit of the summer. With schools like Kansas, Memphis, Georgetown, West Virginia, Miami, Duke, Texas, Memphis and several others calling, Robinson said that he’ll probably only take one visit early.

“I’ll take one official in September, then I’ll take the rest of them through the school year,” Robinson told Phog.Net. “Depends on how the visits go, though. If I like the school then I’m going to sign.”

While he hasn’t decided which school he’ll take that first visit to, he’s got some candidates.

“Kansas, Texas, Memphis,  and Miami,” said Robinson of which schools he’d likely visit. “Maybe some other schools that are getting in there, we’ll see.”

For now, Robinson is simply trying to sort out all of the attention and accolades that have seemingly come out of the blue. Like any athlete he was confident that he could play well this summer, but even he didn’t expect to do so well.

“I’m surprised because during the school year I only had one offer and it was from George Washington.  My recruiting was going slow, now it’s going so fast,” said Robinson of the attention. “Now I have people that are coming for me. People have an attitude where they are coming at me now during the summer like they are trying to knock off one of the top dudes.

“It makes me play harder because I know I can’t lay off.”

Among those who have watched his every move in Las Vegas have been the Kansas staff and Robinson says that he’s interested. But, he also needs to find out more about the Jayhawks and other schools on his list.

“They first saw me like two weeks ago at Reebok and called to offer me right after,” said Robinson. “It’s a great school, they won the tournament and they are always a great program. It’s just about finding whoever is going to give me the best deal to succeed as a player.”
