Phan Voices: Let's Hit Somebody

A football fan remembers past glory and his father.

It was 1984. I was only 8 and attending my first KU football game. The crowd was sparse as the Jayhawks took the field against the #2 ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The crowd was wild and the team played their hearts out. We won and I had no idea until years later what an upset that was. It didn't matter to me. I had the time of my life. My brothers and I were highly embarrassed when at the opening kickoff, my father proceeded to scream "LET'S HIT SOMEBODY!!!" Every game we went to with him, he'd yell this and we would blush and smile both embarrassed and proud of his faith in the Jayhawks.

On September 11, 1992 my father passed away from complications of kidney failure. As we knew he would have wanted, we went to the KU-Ball State contest that Saturday. At the opening kickoff, my brothers and I screamed "LET'S HIT SOMEBODY!!!" with every ounce of energy we had.

At the funeral came, the minister talked at length about my father's love of Kansas Jayhawk football. I had no idea until just then, when the minister related the story, that one of my father's proudest moments was having all of his sons with him for that game in 1984.

It has been a rough season. I have emerged with my Jayhawk spirit intact. Worse Kansas team's than this year's product have given better Nebraska teams some fits in the past in Lawrence. I will be there Saturday, so loud that I can't talk on Sunday. I will cheer my hearts out from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. The players should know that we care and want them to win, no matter the opponent.
