Washburn Taking His Time

Playing for a team loaded with division one talent, Julian Washburn doesn't always get the touches that are usually afforded to a top flight college recruit. However, the six-foot-seven inch junior at Duncanville (TX) High isn't worried about stats right now.

Playing alongside of Texas bound Shawn Williams, Oklahoma State bound Roger Franklin and Reger Dowell and Baylor bound junior Perry Jones, Julian Washburn just tries to be an energizer.

“Right now, I think my game is bringing energy and playing some defense,” said Washburn. “I can also make some jumpers and get out and play in transition.”

A natural combo forward who excels along either baseline, Washburn is a long and athletic player who is quite versatile. He’s started knocking down mid range jumpers with regularity, gets on the offensive glass and is an exciting open court finisher. Looking down the road, though, he sees himself playing exclusively on the wing.

“I think I’m a three, definitely a three,” Washburn told Phog.Net. “I want people to recruit me as a three because I’m going to be small for a four man in college.”

Since college coaches have been rolling through his high school gym and watching him on a regular basis during the summer, Washburn already has a pretty impressive list of suitors.

“Texas, UCLA, Kansas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Arizona, Arizona State and USC are all recruiting me,” said Washburn. “Texas, Kansas and Texas A&M, and USC have offered me.”

With the rest of his junior season and another summer on the club basketball circuit still ahead of him, Washburn is in no real hurry. He declined to speak in specifics about the different schools other to say that he’s in no hurry and that distance won’t matter. It’s just a matter of finding the right fit.

“I’m still feeling it out. I’ve got a long time to wait and figure it out,” said Washburn who also indicated that he preferred programs that got out and ran. “It’s going to be whatever I like the most. If I like somewhere like UCLA or Kansas the most then I’m cool with moving on.”
