A Kansas fan attending the game commented, "Giddens runs like a gazelle. On both of his blocks he got up quick and threw the shot down. He was vicious. A little later on, he was a trailer on the break and the player with the ball took it to the hole and missed. J.R. followed the miss with a wicked dunk -- absolutely explosive off the floor. He handles the ball very well. A lot of times when the offense would be stagnant, J.R. would take the ball at the top of the key and create to get things started. He also had a very nice pull-up jumper on the baseline and a very fluid stroke from 3-point land. He is a quick, fluid athlete and he will make an immediate impact at KU." (Phog.net Hoops Board)
Giddens and the Bears had little time to enjoy the victory as the team played city rival Star Spencer the following evening. John Marshall had already defeated Star Soencer once in the preseason tournament.

The Kansas fan in attendance stated, "Grimes was in foul trouble the entire game, mostly because he is just way too strong for everyone else. He has a very nice stroke from the foul line. He takes it strong to the hole and finishes with authority. This kid is thick, but not fat at all. He will be a great player wherever he goes. On a side note, I saw Bill Self about 5 feet from me evaluating Kalen." (Phog.net Hoops Board)
