"KU was the best place for me."
Strength: 300 bench, 450 squat
Additional facts: Gavin Howard earned varsity letters in basketball (4) and football (3); 4.2 GPA, 31 ACT; plans to major in Aeronautical Engineering; DOB: 10/16/90; parents are Donny and Deidre Howard.
Strengths: "I think I'm pretty good with my footwork and overall athleticism."
Needs work: "I'm still working on getting stronger and bigger. I also want to work on staying lower and improving my leverage."
Recruiting coach/relationship: "Coach [Joe Bob] Clements started recruiting me, and then he left for K-State. Coach [Brandon] Blaney picked things up after he left. Both of them did a good job with me."
Expected to redshirt?: "I know that the best players are going to play. If I'm better than some of the others, I'll play. If I'm not, then I won't. Redshirting isn't a problem. If I did sit out my freshman year, it would give me a chance to work on things that I need to improve."
Why Kansas?: "I've always kind of felt comfortable in Kansas, and I really like the campus. I also really like the coaches, like Coach [Mark] Mangino and Coach [John] Reagan."
"I looked at the other schools, but decided that KU was the best place for me. The program has made strides in recent years. We have a good class coming in. I think we can win the Big 12, and hopefully play for a national championship."
