As the Kangaroos' star quarterback, he's is used to being on the field, in the thick of the action with his teammates.
However, as anyone who ever played organized football can attest, great
lengths are taken to protect the health and safety of QB1. So Friday
night, after completing a successful two weeks of spring practice,
Cummings took in the action from the sideline.
"My coach wouldn't let me," he said, laughing. "He didn't want to let
me play so I'm not going to argue with the head coach."
Cummings has earned a reputation as one of the most dangerous
dual-threat quarterbacks in the Lone Star State. In 2009, he
spearheaded an offense that put up obscene numbers on the season by
throwing for more than 2,500 yards, running for almost 900 and
accounting for 41 touchdowns in leading the Roos to an appearance in
the Class 4A state playoffs.
Prior to the spring Cummings had a small handful of Division One
scholarship offers under his belt, though none from BCS conference
schools. That changed recently, when the University of Kansas extended
an offer to the talented signal-caller.
Kansas has been recruiting him for a little while, he said, and his
initial impressions of Offensive Coordinator Chuck Long and wide
receivers coach Darrell Wyatt – Cummings' lead recruiters on the staff
– have been nothing but positive.
"We talk about football, life, the campus, the atmosphere at Kansas,
what's going on with me and my family back here in Texas," he
explained. "So it's really a friendship type relationship at the
moment, but I know if I choose to go there it will be strictly coach
This weekend, Cummings will make a visit to the Lawrence (Kan.) campus
with his father, to get a better look at the what the Jayhawks under
first-year head coach Turner Gill are all about.
Though he declined to get into specifics, it looks as if a decision on
Cummings' future could be coming soon.
"Honestly, I'm kind of getting close to make a decision on who I'm
going to commit to," he said. "I don't want to say just yet, but I'm
Baylor and Oklahoma State are among the programs showing increased
interest in the Killeen product.
