Not your typical Knight

Brandon Knight is not a typical basketball player, so it should be no surprise that his mother, Turgenia, is not a typical basketball parent.

Brandon Knight is not a typical basketball player, so it should be no surprise that his mother, Turgenia, is not a typical basketball parent.

She admits she's more "artsy" than athletic. She also admits she really has no idea what to expect at Kentucky's Big Blue Madness Friday when she travels here from Florida with her husband, Brandon's older brother and some family friends.

"I can't tell you what to expect. I have never been to one," said Turgenia Knight. "Brandon never went to any on his recruiting visits. I think he had mid-terms or something and didn't take any visits. He was home last weekend and didn't say a lot, either, but nothing really gets him excited. What you see is what you get with him."

She did her best "to spoil him" when he was home. "I like to make sure he eats right because he always wants to work so hard. That's his personality. My husband strives for excellence. I'm more artsy. Brandon and my husband are more analytical. My husband never does anything halfway. It's always 100 percent. So that is just encoded in Brandon's DNA.

"Trust me, he doesn't get his athletic genes from me. He has pictures he has drawn. He has done poetry. He may get those things from me. But his hard work comes from his dad."

Turgenia Knight says she is a "basketball fan" and grew accustomed to her son being a "sports star" from an early age.

"That is just something that has always been true. When he was younger he played football and he was very good playing football. Then he played basketball and I just don't know what it was. Call him a present. Just stick a bow on him, open him up and something good is always inside. I try to downplay that and got brag, but it is the truth," she said. "To be totally honest, we have never had one moment's trouble with him. When I would go to the high school campus, everyone would tell me what a great young man he was and how well prepared he always was."
