Unless some drastic change of plans occur Lamar Dawson will make his announcement on the morning of signing day at Boyle County High School. Not a prediction but some food for thought on what hat he will don on that day.
This writer is the veteran of several of those types of on the scene occurrences of this magnitude. Some of the high profile names that come to mind are Dennis Johnson, Jared Lorenzen, Derek Smith, Tim Couch, and Montrell Jones all Kentucky natives.
We traveled to Harrodsburg, Kentucky in five inches of snow to the press conference where Dennis Johnson made his announcement to come to the University of Kentucky. Johnson was USA Today's high school player of the year.
Lorenzen held a press conference at his high school at Fort Thomas, Kentucky to announce his intention to sign with Kentucky. A couple weeks later, likewise Derek Smith did the same.
Tim Couch did somewhat the same thing in Lexington, Kentucky at the Raddison Hotel on the day of the Louisville versus Kentucky basketball game. The most interesting and somewhat humorous thing about this happening was the fact that Dave Baker and Channel 27 had the exclusive, which irritated the other networks and the vociferously Alan Cutler.
Montrell Jones of Male High School made his commitment to UK with a press conference at the church of his grandmother and family matriarch, Mattie Jones, at 39th and Garland in Louisville. The pastor and civil rights activist at the time was the late Lewis "Buster" Coleman. Jones' commitment was an exception because of some circumstances which we will explore later.
The food for thought comes by way of the aforementioned occurrences. The setting for these event at the high school's encompasses a throng of media, in a very room or gym, a crowd of students, family and friends. Hence the setting for Dawson's announcement. It's very possible that even Jacob Tamme and Jordan Aumiller will be present. The big question, in that type of atmosphere is what hat will he don?
The Montrell Jones situation in which he committed to UK in the city of Louisville was an exception because that was during the Hal Mumme and Claude Bassett era. The University of Kentucky subsequently went on probation and Jones de-committed and went to play for the University of Tennessee Vols.
