SEC Media Days: Day Two Highlights, Part 1

HOOVER, Ala. - It's Day Three of SEC Media Days, the finale of a circus that began Wednesday afternoon at the Wynfrey Hotel. Today's agenda includes the homestanding Alabama Crimson Tide and their head coach, Nick Saban. But first, a few highlights from yesterday. Part 1 focuses on head coach Joker Phillips of Kentucky.

Head coach Joker Phillips appeared for Kentucky. Here are some highlights from his appearance.

Phillips began by addressing the team theme this year of 'Rise.' "Rise meaning not just going to bowl games, but being able to contend for championships in this league," Phillips explained. Whether Kentucky can improve on last year's 6-7 record remains to be seen, but Phillips was optimistic. "We made some positive changes to our coaching staff. We added Rick Minter as our co-defensive coordinator. We have Steve Pardue, a long time Kentuckian and long time coach in the state of Georgia."

Having Kentucky ties--as Phillips has himself, having played for Kentucky--is very important to the program according to Phillips. "You look at our staff, there's five Kentuckians on our staff, three ex-lettermen. Might not be important at some other places, but I think it's important for Kentucky football that there are guys that truly want to be there."

In addition to coaching changes, you may recall that earlier this summer it was reported that Kentucky changed their off-season workout regimes. The change moved the focus from speed training more to strength training, in an effort to avoid being pushed around.

"I think you'll see more result from the year and a half that our football team has been under coach Rock Oliver, his strength and conditioning staff," Phillips explained. "Our players will look different. They're a lot bigger, stronger, faster, leaner."
