Highlands coach Mueller on Towles Part 2

"Last year Towles had former UK?quarterback Jared Lorenzen, a Highlands graduate, has his quarterback coach and that helped him, too. He's not had that edge this year because Lorenzen's business duties have kept him from coaching.

Mueller isn't sure if Collinsworth will be at Friday's game or if his NFL?TV work will keep him away. "But he was at practice Saturday and will help get us ready for the game," Mueller said.

Last year Towles had former UK?quarterback Jared Lorenzen, a Highlands graduate, has his quarterback coach and that helped him, too. He's not had that edge this year because Lorenzen's business duties have kept him from coaching.

"But he helped a ton last year,"?Mueller said. Towles is also a tireless worker to go with his talent.

"We do a lot of football here at Highlands. The day after the state championship game, he went to basketball. Once basketball ended, he was at spring football the next day. We got to the summer and then things really got involved. But he likes that," Mueller said.

The future UK quarterback also has seen first-hand how to handle pressure from his grandfather, former baseball pitcher Jim Bunning and a former U.S. Senator.

"He's so good under pressure. Jim was a great baseball player, but he's also been such a powerful man in the United States Congress. You get criticized in that position a lot and people say some terrible things about you. He's been raised watching his grandfather deal with that," Towles said.

Towles has another big plus, too. Mueller says the Bluebirds are "loaded with excellent receivers" going into this season.

One is Austin Sheehan, who has already said he'll walk on at UK?next season. He was held out of last week's scrimmage at Trinity with a minor injury but will play at Boyle.

"Austin is just a great receiver. He stretches the whole field. He's the fastest kid in northern Kentucky. He has great hands and runs great routes," Towles said. "Austin's commitment to Kentucky did surprise me a bit, but Joker (Phillips) and his staff all do such a great job. I am a big Joker fan. Austin has a lot of respect for him and loves Kentucky and just decided to commit as a walk-on. Him and Patrick are great friends, too, and that probably played a part in it."

Mueller says junior backup quarterback Donovan McCoy is a "great athlete" and says junior Jack Collinsworth "is 6-3 and can fly." Junior David Christian, senior Beau McGhee and junior Luke Turner are all capable receivers. McGhee had a touchdown catch against Trinity and Turner caught "two long balls" in the scrimmage.

That group gives Towles target for his strong, accurate passes Mueller plans to let him launch often and could bring many postseason honors Towles' way if he has the season Mueller expects.

"I would say he is underrated overall despite the attention he's receiver. He is a great, great player. By the time the season is over, I?don't know who could be more deserving of Mr. Football than him," Mueller said.
