Here is what freshman running back Josh Clemons, who had a 14-yard touchdown run in his UK?debut and gained 39 yards on 11 carries, had to say after Kentucky's 14-3 win over Western Kentucky in Nashville Thursday night.
Question: What did it feel like to finally get on the field and play and even score a touchdown?
Clemons: "It was just amazing. I am glad to just do whatever I?can to help the team win. I felt prepared. Maybe not from day one, but as time went along I was prepared for this."
Question: What happened on the 14-yard scoring run around the right side?
Clemons: "It was supposed to be an outside play and I saw the crease and just hit it hard (to the inside). That is what the coach teaches. Go outside and if it is not there, just stick it inside and get up the field and that's what I did."
Question: How was it adjusting to not playing all the time like you did in high school?
Clemons: "You just have to stay in the game and cheer on the other guys on the field at the time and when your number is called, just get ready."
Question: How do you feel the team played offensively since overall Kentucky had just 190 yards?
Clemons: "It's the first game, you are always going to have mistakes. We have time to get it together before the next game."
Question: Were you nervous for your first collegiate game or just more excited?
Clemons: "It's kind of hard to describe it. I was kind of nervous coming here, but once I?got on the field and started warming up, everything was normal. I didn't really expect to get as many touches as I did, but I was hoping to get in the game a little bit. I wanted to be on the field and help the team as much as I?could. I got that opportunity and I am thankful for it. With all the adrenaline and stuff, this felt just like high school even when you got it. It was all the same and not that big a difference."
Question: Does it create more pressure on you and Raymond Sanders to produce when the passing game does not spread the field out?
Clemons: "No, I just focus on what I?have to do and then execute it the best I can."
Question: How do you feel you did picking up blitzes since that was a big concern you had going into preseason camp?
Clemons: "I felt like I did pretty good. They coached me up pretty good on that and I could see who I needed to get. We put in a lot of time, so I?have it down almost pat."
Question: What can you take out of this game since it was only a 14-3 win?
Clemons: "Just keep building on what coach (Randy) Sanders keeps stressing about getting up to the line and looking like a football player and controlling things we can control. Then just working on our plays to get better."
Question: Coach Joker Phillips called winning this game a "huge positive" for UK, but do you feel that way?
Clemons: "Winning has got to be positive some how, so I think it is."
Question: As a freshman, are you maybe more excited about the win than the older players?
Clemons: "I feel like we are all on the same page with everything. I think we are all on the same page with the excitement. We are glad to win, but wish we had done more."
Question: Did you know Kentucky scored 63 points against Western last year?
Clemons: "Yeah I did. I saw that earlier when we were watching the film."
Question: What would you say to fans who might be worried about this offense now?
Clemons: "I wouldn't tell them to be worried. Just give us a little time with practice and stuff and we will get it right."
Question: Are you looking forward to your first game in Commonwealth Stadium Sept. 10 against Central Michigan?
Clemons: "Yes, that will really be exciting. I was so happy to just get back on the field anywhere. It has been a long time since my last high school game. I was disappointed losing that last game and never getting to play high school ball again, but now I am on a new level with new people and ready to grow with each other."
Question: Did we see everything Josh Clemons has to offer this team tonight?
Clemons: "I am working more on understanding what we are doing and I?think I can get a little more involved and help more
