Since it was announced that the Southeastern Conference chancellors and presidents unanimously voted to add Texas A&M to the SEC both Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart and basketball coach John Calipari have commented on the addition of the Aggies.
In a prepared statement Barnhart said, "On behalf of the coaches, administrators and student-athletes at the University of Kentucky, I would like to welcome the Texas A&M Aggies to the Southeastern Conference. Coming off its best year athletically in school history, Texas A&M adds a strong athletic program along with its academic prowess to the best league in the country. I look forward to competing against one of my mentors, Bill Byrne, for years to come."
Calipari's announcement was somewhat less formal, as his comments came via Twitter. Calipari tweeted, "I'd like to welcome Billy Kennedy & Texas A&M to the SEC. Congrats to Commissioner Slive & our presidents on a great addition to our league."
With the vote Texas A&M became the 13th SEC team and expands SEC media footprint into the heart of Texas. The geographic footprint of the SEC increases 42% with the addition of Texas A&M. The media markets in major Texas population centers in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, even San Antonio, will all be open markets for the SEC with the addition of A&M.
