Bowling Green High School Clenches 14th District

It has been a long and winding road to the championship for BGHS as they have been deemed unable to string together enough hits, by some, and their defense has been suspect all season. The shakedown follows.

Returning regional champs Greenwood were picked as the 14th district powerhouse for the season and the team to beat. A team loaded with underclassmen and power throughout the lineup. Warren Central struggled with errors all season and the resignation of head coach Rick Alfonso surely made things hard for the Dragons. Warren East were considered to be the underdogs this season but head coach Craig Delk proved that with heart and determination you can go places and be recognized. BGHS played all season with a full junior infield but senior 3rd baseman Matt Morrison. BGHS finished regular season play with a record of 4-2 putting them in the drivers seat for the tournament with a 3rd straight year 14th district regular season championship.

District play started at Warren Central to a max capacity crowd attended by several college coaches and scouts. BGHS and Warren East got the first game and senior pitcher/3rd base Matt Morrison got the ball for BGHS. This was a close game through 5 but BGHS pulled away with an 8-4 win over Warren East.

Second game pits GHS and Warren Central. Can the Dragons beat the Gators 3 straight. The answer is YES. Senior pitcher John Whitaker led the Dragons to victory pushing the Gators out of post season play.

Championship game has BGHS facing Warren Central. BGHS senior pitcher/of Brit Vincent and Warren Central senior pitcher Mitch Webster get the go in what seems to be the game of the season for both clubs. A few infield changes were made for BGHS with disapproval from most fans but these changes worked in BGHS's favor. Warren Central jumped out ahead early on but could not hang on as BGHS proved the naysayers wrong hitting all the way through the lineup leaving Warren Central with the runners up trophy and BGHS clenching their (never been done in the 14th) 4th straight district championship.

All in all this season has been on of heartbreak and triumph for the Purples of BGHS as they have played hard, made mistakes, then again played hard. The future looks bright for these young men as they prepare to step on the field for yet another regional tourney birth.

14th district all tournament team players are: GHS Ben Sowders, Alex McDougal, Dustin Turner, Chris Brown , Warren Central Derrick Alfonso, Eric Moore, Warren East Justin Basil, Joe Grinstead, Brian Upchurch, Shawn Atchley, BGHS Bret Ray, Matt Morrison, Brit Vincent.
