Demaree: Thoughts on Kentucky sports

Kentucky Sports Report's Lonny Demaree shares his thoughts on University of Kentucky sports.

* We view UK the same way Punxsutawney Phil see's winter weather. After Saturday the Cats have six more weeks of basketball, which would carry them to the NCAA championship game.

* John Calipari needs a title, Kentucky needs a title. Since Calipari's arrival this season is the best chance to hang a banner in Rupp Arena. The last title came in 1998 with the Comeback Cats, it has been fourteen years since a banner has been hung.

* As of 02/02/12 the NBA mock draft read #1 Anthony Davis; #2 Michael Kidd-Gilchrist; #15 Terrence Jones; #29 Doron Lamb. Can John Calipari be counted on to continue recruiting #1 recruiting classes?

* During this season's NBA negotiations no serious attempt was made to address the one-and-done for college basketball players. The only national writer that even wrote an advocacy article about it was Mike DeCourcy. All the rest of the national writers know that two-and-done would allow John Calipari to build a dynasty.

* Given that today's open practice for the students, faculty, and staff was telecast locally and nationally it is safe to say that Coach continues his Public Relations wizardry.

* In many fans eye Syracuse is the biggest threat to UK winning he national championship. Does the U of L versus Cuse game give the fans any insight to how much of a threat they are?

* Cal discussed Marquis Teague at the preseason media day press conference. He termed Marquis Teague a pit-bull. Now he calls him a bulldog......

* Cal has hit the referees hard on the block/charge call. Yours truly, having been involved in an officiating capacity in the past, can tell you they are the most protected species in the sporting world.

* Keep an eye on the Michigan State Spartans because of their coach and their physicality.

* Remember the many Lady Vol rim-rattlers in Memorial Coleseum that did not fall and aided the UK victory? All those fell for Tennessee the other day.

* The loss by the UK women to the Vols on the hardwood prevented a University of Kentucky sweep in the three major sports. The Wildcat football team, the men basketball team, and the first women's basketball game, were all wins.

* Joker Phillips hopes to have addressed in his 2012 recruiting class the absence of play-makers on the 2011 team in which he got absolutely zero out of his return teams.

* Daylen Hall who has been released from the team didn't help that matter any. He had the speed a athleticism to help fill that void.

* The ever nearing of spring practice will give Phillps a chance to see if there are any surprises on the squad that fill the play making rolls.
