Atlanta (Ga.) Grady High School tight end Darren Dowdell has been on the verge of a verbal commitment late this summer. Could a second unofficial visit to Kentucky this weekend lead to the latest addition to the Wildcats' 2013 class?
"I was supposed to go up there this past weekend, but we had to push it back a week," Dowdell said. "So I'll be going up there this weekend with my quarterback, Kivon Taylor, to check out their practice and talk to the coaches again."
Dowdell (6-4, 225) attended UK's "Sunday Showcase" camp earlier this summer. He said he nearly committed to the Cats during that trip to Lexington, but decided to return home and slow the process down in order to ensure he was making the right decision.
"I liked everything about it -- the coaching staff, the facilities, the overall athletic program," Dowdell said. "Everything was great. I see it as a real good fit for me."
Asked what he hopes to learn on his return to Lexington, Dowdell said: "I just want to see how the coaches work with the players, how hard they push their guys, because I'm a guy who wants to be coached hard to reach my potential. I want to see how the players react to the coaches and what kind of talent they have up there. I also want to see the other guys at my position and how they use them."
Dowdell, who caught approximately 50 passes and 10 touchdowns as a junior, says he feels like he is a priority for the UK staff.
"Coach (David) Turner says I could really come in there and help their program," he said. "I feel like I'm the guy they want at tight end."
Another big key to seeing Dowdell in blue and white could be his close friend Taylor, who has also receive interest from the UK staff.
"We're real close," Dowdell said. "He's like a brother to me. It would be big if they offered him, too. We would like to go to the same school together."
Dowdell also holds offers from Wake Forest, N.C. State and Maryland. He is receiving steady interest from Auburn and Clemson.
"My dad wants me to go see Wake Forest and Clemson, even though they haven't offered yet," he said.
Dowdell and his Grady teammates open the 2012 season on Aug. 31 against Decatur High School.
Kentucky currently has 12 verbal commitments for 2013, but none at the tight end position to date.
