Kentucky coach Joker Phillips had his final day of media availability on Thursday at the Nutter Training Center leading up to this week's game against South Carolina.
Phillips said starting quarterback Maxwell Smith, recovering from a strained shoulder joint, returned to practice and threw the ball well. He is expected to play against the Gamecocks.
The Wildcats could be without starting safety Ashely Lowery, though. Phillips said Martavius Neloms moved back to his old safety spot this week in anticipation that Lowery will be held out Saturday. That means UK could have three true freshmen defensive backs – Cody Quinn, Fred Tiller and J.D. Harmon – on the field together at times against South Carolina.
