Kentucky has made it a point to land long, athletic prospects in recent years. Darren Dowdell fits that mold to a tee. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound tight end, is big, athletic and says that he's a playmaker on the field.
"I think just my presence on the field will help them," said Dowdell of his future team. "I'm an all-around player. But I prefer to be on offense. I can do a lot with the ball in my hands. I can be a finisher."
The Grady High (Ga.) prospect recognized Kentucky wearing down late against South Carolina and he believes he could do something to help them get over the hump.
"I think I can help them. They came out strong, but they didn't finish in the second half. I thinkI can halp there," he said.
Dowdell had been thought to be on the verge of committing for several weeks, but he went ahead and pulled the trigger during his unofficial visit yesterday. He was impressed with the environment and the attitude of the program.
"It was the whole atmosphere; when I stepped on campus and how everybody greeted me," said Dowdell. "It was like (the coaches) were waiting on me for a while. I like the feeling that it gave me. I liked getting to see how the players and coaches interacted with each other," he continued.
While Dowdell has committed to Kentucky, you can classify this is a "semi-soft" commit, as he's still interested in hearing from other programs.
"I'm still kind of looking around, but I'm still solid at the same time," he said.
Dowdell picked Kentucky over offers from North Carolina State, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Louisville and Indiana. This was an unofficial visit for him and he plans to return on an official later in the season with another UK commit, Deangelo Yancey.
"Yeah, me and DeAngelo are pretty good friends," he finished.
