Kentucky's coaching change may have an impact on the recruitment of the one quarterback the Wildcats were expected to sign for 2013.
Signal Mountain (Tenn.) High School quarterback Reese Phillips said he is keeping all options open after hearing the news Sunday that UK will have a new staff next season.
"I'm just being patient right now," said Phillips, "but I'm definitely open to listen to Kentucky whenever that decision is made or any other schools if they happen to call. I just don't know right now. It's all happened so fast.
"I wouldn't say it was a shock or anything that Joker (Phillips) got fired, but it's still upsetting even though you knew it may be coming. I really felt good about their coaches."
Phillips spoke briefly with his recruiting coach, Randy Sanders, on Sunday evening.
"He didn't have a whole lot to say," Phillips said. "You could tell he was down, and it really sounded doubtful that he would be back. I hate to hear that because he's 90 percent of the reason why I decided to commit to them. He came down and threw with me. He's the first coach who really saw the potential in me to be an SEC quarterback."
Phillips declined to talk about other potential schools of interest at this time, but he had been linked to Duke, Memphis and Middle Tennessee State earlier in his recruitment.
Kentucky has 15 verbal commitments to date. The Wildcats are expected to sign approximately 20 players in the Class of 2013.
The big challenge moving forward, particularly if Phillips decides to look elsewhere, is that many of the top quarterback prospects are already off the board, and Kentucky had not expanded its search at the position since receiving the verbal from Phillips.
As a senior, Phillips threw for approximately 2,300 yards. He had 25 combined touchdowns, rushing and passing.
