There aren't many open spots remaining in Kentucky's 2013 football recruiting class, but one of them is slated for Franklin County standout Ryan Timmons, who made his long-awaited official visit to Lexington this weekend.
"It was a good time," Timmons said. "You know, I've been up there plenty of times before, so I already knew most of the stuff I needed to know about the school and the program. The big thing about this visit was getting to know the rest of the coaching staff better and continuing to build my relationship with coach Stoops, letting my family get to know him better.
"I was with coach Stoops for most of the visit, he and coach (Neal) Brown and the new wide receivers coach (Tommy Mainord). They made me feel really comfortable there. They talked about how similar my high school offense was to how they'd like to use me at UK, moving me around to different spots, getting the ball in my hands in different ways -- at receiver, out of the backfield, so I can make plays in open space."
Timmons (5-11, 185, 4.4) may be the Bluegrass State's best overall athlete in the Class of 2013. As a senior, he accounted for 2,368 (41 percent) of Franklin County's 5,781 yards of total offense. He had 83 rushing attempts for 1,364 yards (15.7 ypa) and 26 touchdowns. He had 33 receptions for 1,004 yards (30.4 ypc) and 16 touchdowns. He also averaged 84.7 yards per kickoff return, taking back all three times opponents dared to challenge him for touchdowns.
Timmons finished the season with 45 total touchdowns on 124 touches, scoring every 2.7 times he had the ball in his hands. The Flyers went 12-1, posting the best record in school history.
Kentucky, Florida, Missouri and Ohio State are his top four with only two weekends remaining until signing day. He has in-home visits scheduled with all four next week, including Florida and former UK coach Joker Phillips on Monday, Missouri and Ohio State on Wednesday and Kentucky on Thursday.
Timmons said he may be ready to announce his college decision after those meetings.
"I'm supposed to take a visit to Florida, but after these coaches come in next week, don't be surprised if I end up committing," said Timmons, who does not claim a leader at this time, but noted that UK, Florida and Missouri hold an edge on Ohio State because the Buckeyes haven't issued an official scholarship offer to date.
"If I feel good enough about things after hearing everyone's last spiel, I may just go ahead and commit."
The Wildcats have made up a lot of ground since hiring Stoops & Co.
"For the short amount of time they've recruited me, I really feel great about them," Timmons said. "Me and coach Brown have really bonded well. He's very excited about putting in their new offense."
He likes the video presentations he has seen on what the UK offense should look like.
"I like what they're doing with tempo," Timmons said. "It's really impressive."
He also feels better about the players on the UK roster after getting to spend some quality time with the Wildcats this weekend.
"I hung around with some of the new commits that we already have, the defensive end (Za'Darius Smith), a few of the receivers and Patrick Towles, who was my host," said Timmons, perhaps hinting as to which direction he might be leaning at this point. "They're all good guys. I felt like I could fit in with them."
