Florida took advantage of three Kentucky errors in the bottom of the seventh inning on Friday to break open a tie game and grab the weekend series lead over the Wildcats with a 4-1 win.
Kentucky (14-3) had rallied to tied the game on a two-out double by A.J. Reed in the sixth inning, but defense betrayed the Cats in the seventh as the Gators plated three unearned runs.
The fateful inning snapped a streak of strong glovework by UK early in the season. The Cats had committed only two errors in their last eight games.
Reed (2-2) suffered the hard-luck loss, working 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and just one earned run while striking out five. It marked the third quality start of the season for the sophomore left-hander and preseason All-America selection.
The Wildcats collected four hits in the game, getting two each from Reed and fellow All-American Austin Cousino. Sophomore Max Kuhn drew a walk to extend his streak of reaching base to 17 games – each contest of 2013.
Florida (9-10) starter Jay Carmichael worked 5.2 strong innings, allowing only three hits and one run, walking two and striking out two. Ryan Harris (3-1) picked up the win with two shutout innings in relief.
The series will resume on Saturday at noon ET. The game will be televised live on Fox SportsSouth and will also be broadcast live on the UK IMG Radio Network. UK will send senior southpaw Jerad Grundy (3-1, 1.35 ERA) to the mound to face off with Florida ace right-hander Jonathon Crawford (0-2, 4.22 ERA), a member of the USA Collegiate National Team during the summer.
