Cats top Herd 8-2

Kentucky picked up its 19th win of the season on Wednesday with an 8-2 victory over Marshall at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

Freshman catcher Greg Fettes had a pair of hits and reached base safely in all four trips to the plate Wednesday in helping lead No. 8 Kentucky to an 8-2 win over Marshall at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

Kentucky (19-5) used an assortment of young pitchers for the mid-week victory, including starter Chandler Shepherd, who worked three innings, Kyle Cody, Dylan Dwyer, Ryne Combs and Zach Strecker before senior Walter Wijas closed it out in the ninth. Cody (2-1) picked up the win with two shutout innings.

Marshall (10-13) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings, but starter Alex Thackston and reliever Matt Margaritonda (0-4) could not hold it.

Fettes singled and doubled, while shortstop Matt Reida also had two hits, two RBI and a pair of runs scored for UK. Austin Cousino, Kyle Barrett, Zac Zellers and Thomas Bernal each added one hit for the Cats. Zeller also drove in two runs.

UK returns to action Friday in the first of a three-game SEC weekend series against Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
