Larry's a Lion.
Kentucky senior Larry Warford was selected by the Detroit Lions on Friday in the third round of the NFL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 333-pound guard was the 65th pick overall and became the first offensive lineman from UK to be selected since 1993.
He will help bolster one of the stronger offensive units in the NFL. Led by quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Detroit was third in the league last year in total offense (408.8 yards per game), but only 17th in scoring (23.3 ppg) and 23rd in rushing (100.8 ypg).
Warford, who came to UK via Madison Central High School in Richmond, Ky., did not allow a quarterback sack as a senior. He graded at 90.3 percent on the season and tallied 48 knockdown blocks, helping the Wildcats' running backs average 4.9 yards per carry.
As a senior, Warford was a third-team All-America selection by The Associated Press. He was the first UK offensive lineman to earn that honor since Warren Bryant was a second-team selection in 1976.
Warford is the Wildcats' highest draft pick since Randall Cobb was taken in the second round (64th overall) by the Green Bay Packers in 2011.
