Arkansas came into this weekend's series at Kentucky with a reputation for strong pitching. The Razorbacks showed why on Friday night in a 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
The nation's top ERA squad got a strong starting effort from Barrett Astin, who allowed only one run run five hits over 5.2 innings before handing it over the the Razorbacks' bullpen for the final 10 outs of the night.
Arkansas (31-15, 14-7 SEC) saw relievers Trent Daniel, Brandon Moore, Jalen Beeks and Colby Suggs lock down the win for Astin (4-2). Suggs recorded his ninth save of the year.
Kentucky's A.J. Reed was almost up to the task, matching Astin pitch for pitch through four innings. Arkansas' Jake Wise broke through with a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning, and Matt Vinson made it 2-0 later in the frame with a two-out RBI single.
Kentucky (26-18, 9-13 Southeastern Conference) loaded the bases in the sixth, but was only able to push across one run as the Razorback bullpen rose to the occasion.
The Wildcats got a three-hit game from junior second baseman J.T. Riddle, but the rest of the lineup could only muster four hits off the stingy Arkansas staff.
The series will now conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader set for noon ET. The third game was moved from Sunday to Saturday due to the threat of inclement weather in Lexington later this weekend.
