When it came to talking about recruiting priorities for the immediate future, Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops spent more time this spring discussing the Wildcats' need for defensive backs than almost any other position.
It comes as little surprise that UK would be looking into some of the better junior college programs in the country for help, and the staff recently issued a scholarship offer at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College.
"They had started following me on Twitter, coach (Tommy) Mainord, and not too long after that he visited me and offered me a scholarship," said Shattle Fenteng. "I've been talking to him and coach (Derrick) Ansley since then. We're starting to build a relationship, getting to know each other."
He admitted he doesn't know much about Kentucky at this time, but is intrigued by the new coaching staff. "I've heard some good things about them," he said.
Fenteng (6-2, 180, 4.45) fits the mold of bigger, faster corners the new UK staff is seeking. As a freshman at Hutchinson, he recorded 57 tackles, 16 passes defended and four interceptions.
"My goal is to make All-American next season," he said, adding that coaches at the next level love his size, footwork and hips - the trademark tools of a star cover man.
Originally from Grayson High School in Georgia, Fenteng said he's getting some good attention from SEC schools like UK, Ole Miss, Georgia and Tennessee in addition to other BCS programs like Texas Tech, West Virginia and Kansas State.
"It's still pretty early for me," he said of his recruitment. "I really don't have a list of favorites yet, but I do know that Ole Miss will probably be in my Top 3. They've been recruiting me for a long time, and they were my first offer. They tell me there's a good chance to come in and play early. Also, I've got some old friends there from Grayson, so that's one school I know I'll take a look at."
Fenteng says visits will likely have to wait until the fall. He is on track to be a December 2013 graduate and should be able to join his new school next spring. He has three years to complete two years of eligibility.
