Few players in any class had as good a spring as 2015 center/forward Cheick Diallo. Buzz surrounding his play on the Nike EYBL circuit and at the recent NBPA Top 100 Camp in Virginia has the Big Blue Nation wondering if Kentucky could be on the verge of extending a scholarship offer sometime this summer.
The 6-foot-9, 220-pound big man was a scoring-rebounding-defending ball of energy in Charlottesville last weekend, earning MVP honors after posting 11 points and 7.8 rebounds per game at UVA, but is playing his recruitment close to the vest right now.
"Ah, not yet. Not yet," said a smiling Diallo, a native of Africa whose first name is pronounced 'SH-eck.' "I am a sophomore. Maybe next year."
Diallo may not be ready for his newfound status, but that won't stop a wave of major program coaches from calling this summer. The Centereach (N.Y.) Our Savior standout already holds offers from programs like Syracuse, UConn, Pittsburgh, Florida, Kansas, Arizona, Louisville, St. John's, Texas, Villanova and UConn.
Others, like UK, Ohio State and Indiana, have expressed heavy interest.
"I'm happy to have all the interest, but I really don't know much about (the recruiting process) yet," Diallo said. "I'm just trying to play and get better.
"I know nothing (about the schools recruiting him). They all talk to my coaches."
Diallo, who speaks English as a second language, described playing in America as "challenging." But he added that he's picking up a little more -- both on the court and off it -- with each passing day. "It's getting better."
So should his ranking. Diallo is currently No. 26 in the Scout/FOX Class of 2015 player rankings, but will likely get a big bump in the near future based on his play this spring.
"Diallo is having as good a spring as any high school recruit in the country," said FOX Sports NEXT national basketball analyst Evan Daniels. "His motor doesn't stop, he's a very good athlete, and he's active in the paint. He rebounds well, contests shots and has good touch with both hands around the rim."
Diallo's stock soaring into summer
