Perfect Game USA names Reed midseason POY

Kentucky's A.J. Reed has been named the midseason National Player of the Year by Perfect Game USA, the publication announced Thursday.

The two-way star leads the Southeastern Conference in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage for the No. 19 Wildcats. The junior lefty also owns a 5-1 record and a 2.20 ERA in seven starts on the mound.

A first-team preseason All-America by Baseball America, Reed has hit .343 with a .481 on-base percentage and nine home runs, 33 RBI and 29 runs scored for UK, which is among the national leaders in offense.

On the mound, the Terre Haute, Ind., native owns wins over preseason No. 1 Virginia, No. 1 South Carolina and No. 5 Vanderbilt.

LSU right-hander Aaron Nola was selected the midseason pitcher of the year. South Carolina pitcher Wil Crowe was chosen the midseason freshman of the year, while Houston's Todd Whitting was tabbed the midseason coach of the year.

Kentucky (20-9, 4-5 SEC) returns to action on Friday, playing host to No. 12 Florida at 6:30 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium. Reed is the Cats' expected starter in the opener of the three-game weekend series against the Gators.
