Blakeney Offered By UNC

Antonio Blakeney, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Orlando (Fla.) Oak Ridge, officially picked up a scholarship offer from North Carolina on Monday evening.

UNC head coach Roy Williams called Blakeney and informed him that the Tar Heels would turn up their recruitment with him.

“He called me and just talked to me and stuff,” Blakeney said. “First thing he asked if it was too late. He just said he wanted to offer me a scholarship. He said the first time he saw me in Sacramento I didn’t shoot the ball well, but when he saw me this week he was blown away.”

“He said they’ve been struggling with shooting,” Blakeney added. “That’s what they struggled with last year. He thinks I can come in and fill that void.”

What was Blakeney’s reaction to the offer?

“I felt good about it,” he said. “North Carolina is a good school and a real good program. I’ve just got to think about where I want to go.”

North Carolina has been involved in Blakeney’s recruitment since early in his junior year. While the Tar Heels didn’t back all the way off, they did cool on him some.

“They were recruiting me a while back, but they hadn’t offered,” he said. “I stopped talking to them for a while. Actually Hubert Davis always kept in touch, but that was my second time talking to Roy and he offered me a scholarship today.”

“They definitely want me to visit,” he added. “He said he was going to call me right after Peach Jam.”

To go with an offer from UNC, Blakeney holds scholarship offers from Kentucky, Florida, Louisville, Florida State, Missouri, USC, LSU, Oregon, Georgia, Kansas, Marquette, Notre Dame, UC and Xavier. Blakeney has only visited Louisville, Florida and Florida State.

“I was thinking about cutting my list at end of the summer, but with new schools like Kentucky and North Carolina coming in I may hold out a little longer.”

Blakeney is ranked as one of the top 20 players in the 2015 class.
