Nineteen former Cats on NBA Rosters

As a new NBA season tips off Tuesday night, 19 former Kentucky players are on opening-night rosters across the league.

The Wildcats have more alumni currently in the NBA than any other program in the country, according to a press release issued by UK.

Kentucky’s most-veteran player in the league is Nazr Mohammed, who enters his 17th season as a member of the hometown Chicago Bulls. The Cats’ newest members to enter the league are the Los Angeles Lakers’ Julius Randle and the Boston Celtics’ James Young.

Four different franchises have two former UK players on the opening-day roster: Boston (Rajon Rondo, Young), New Orleans (Anthony Davis, Darius Miller), Phoenix (Eric Bledsoe, Archie Goodwin) and Toronto (Chuck Hayes, Patrick Patterson).

Kentucky coach John Calipari has coached 19 players who have been drafted over the last five seasons. Fifteen players were selected in the first round with eight going in the opening 10 selections. All three of those totals are the best marks of any school in the country in the five-year span.

Calipari has had at least one player selected in the top 10 of the draft in each of the last seven years dating back to his time at Memphis. He is the only coach in history to have three drafted No. 1 overall (Derrick Rose in 2008, John Wall in 2010 and Anthony Davis in 2012).

Four former Cats will take the court tonight on the league’s opening night. Davis and Miller with the Pelicans host the Orlando Magic at 8 p.m. ET, while Terrence Jones’ Rockets visit Randle and the Lakers at 10:30 p.m. ET.
