UK's Bernal, Cody earn preseason recognition

Kentucky standouts Thomas Bernal and Kyle Cody have earned recognition heading into the 2015 college baseball season.

Bernal, a fifth-year senior infielder, has been named a preseason All-SEC selection by Perfect Game. Cody, a junior pitcher, has been tabbed the No. 19 prospect in this year’s draft by MLB.com.

A native of Paso Robles, Calif., Bernal had a breakout season in 2014 as UK’s every day first baseman. He batted .305 with nine doubles, one home run and 32 RBI. He was even better when the competition rose in SEC play, posting a .348 average.

This season, Bernal is expected to slide across the diamond to third base with the departure of Max Kuhn, while the Cats work in promising newcomer Evan White at first base.

Cody, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound right-hander, is coming off a strong showing in the prestigious Cape Cod League, where he was an all-star selection. The Wisconsin native posted the top fastball (97 mph) clocked in the event and was tabbed a preseason All-American earlier this winter by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. As a sophomore, he had a 4-0 record and a 2.84 ERA for UK.

The Cats also have a 2015 commitment, Michigan high school outfielder Nick Plummer, ranked No. 14 in the MLB.com Prospect Watch.

Kentucky will open its season on Feb. 13 vs. Ball State in Wilmington, N.C., with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on the UK Radio Network, with Dick Gabriel voicing the action.
