Career games for Shelby, Wilson power Cats

Kentucky salvaged a win in the finale a four-game West Coast trip Sunday, riding career-high performances from sophomore infielder JaVon Shelby and sophomore outfielder Storm Wilson to a 12-7 win over No. 16 UC Santa Barbara.

Shelby (pictured above) hit a three-run homer and drove in a career-high four runs, while Wilson produced his best day at the plate with four hits and two RBI to lead the Wildcats (3-3).

The home run was Shelby's second of the young season. He had just four last season in 56 games and appears primed for a breakout year.

UK also got multi-hit games from Thomas Bernal and Ka’ai Tom to support starting pitcher Logan Salow and Dylan Dwyer, the latter who entered in the fourth inning after Salow reached his pitch count. Dwyer (1-0) pitched 3.1 innings without allowing an earned run.

The Cats jumped out to a big lead after three innings against UCSB starter Justin Jacome (1-1), who allowed seven runs on seven hits and one walk.

Riley Mahan, Evan White and Kyle Barrett each had one hit for UK, including the first career double for Mahan. White, also a freshman, also drove in two runs.

It marked the first loss of the season for UCSB (6-1).

Kentucky returns to action Wednesday in the home opener at Cliff Hagan Stadium against Morehead State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
