UK Takes Four On Impromptu Florida Trip

Frigid temperatures and the remnants of a major snowstorm forced Kentucky Baseball on an unscheduled trip to the Sunshine State this weekend, and the Wildcats returned home with four wins under their belts.

Robert Zeigler struck out six over five innings Sunday to lead UK to an 8-2 over Mount St. Mary’s in Port Charlotte, Fla., and complete a four-game sweep on the trip. It marked the sophomore right-hander’s first career start.

The Cats also got strong relief work in the finale, including 2.2 perfect innings from Zach Strecker, who equaled his career high with five strikeouts.

Kyle Barrett and Riley Mahan each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Cats at the plate, including the fourth double of the season for Barrett and a triple for Mahan.

Ka’ai Tom and Evan White each added two hits and drove in one run apiece, while Thomas Bernal and Connor Heady recorded one hit and one RBI. White, a freshman first baseman, extended his hitting streak to 10 games, having collected one in every game to start his college career.

Kentucky (7-3) also got wins over Nebraska-Omaha and Northwestern during the weekend. Storm Wilson and Bernal each had three hits in the opener, a 14-inning affair won 6-5 by the Cats. Andrew Nelson improved to 2-0 on the season, closing the win out from the bullpen.

Preseason All-American Kyle Cody (1-1) starred in the second game, pitching seven no-hit innings and striking out a career-high nine in a 5-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha. Barrett had a four-hit game for the Cats.

In the third game, UK topped Northwestern 5-4 on the strength of a strong start from Zack Brown, who allowed only one earned run on five hits over six innings of work. Logan Salow (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen, while Spencer Jack picked up his first save of the season.

The Cats are scheduled to play their home opener on Tuesday, hosting in-state rival Murray State at 4 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
