Brown, Beggs, Cody pitch Cats to sweep

Kentucky got a trio of impressive starting pitching efforts to sweep Northern Kentucky in a quickly-organized series taking advantage of the weekend thaw in Lexington.

Junior college transfer Dustin Beggs and preseason All-American Kyle Cody each improved to 2-1 on the season by mowing down the Norsemen in a Sunday doubleheader at Cliff Hagan Stadium. On Saturday, Zack Brown picked up his first win of the season, hurling a complete-game, two-hit shutout while striking out 11.

Beggs allowed three runs on five hits and struck out eight in leading UK to a 7-6 win in Sunday's opener. Zach Logue came on to record his first career save. Cody was dominant in the finale, allowing only one run on four hits while fanning eight in a 9-3 win by the Wildcats.

Kentucky (12-3) extended its winning streak to 10 games, tied for the seventh longest in program history. NKU filled a spot on the schedule vacated by UMass, which was unable to make the trip to the Bluegrass State after the massive winter storm that swept across the eastern half of the country.

The Cats got three-hit games from catcher Zach Arnold and designated hitter Dorian Hairston in Sunday's first game. Second baseman JaVon Shelby had a two-hit, two-RBI game, and outfielder Ka’ai Tom added a two-run single. In Sunday's second game, Tom drove in three runs with a pair of hits to lead UK. The Cats also got two-hit days from Greg Fettes and Shelby.

Thomas Bernal led UK with two hits in the series opener Saturday. Tom added an RBI hit and Kyle Barnett extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

UK returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Cincinnati at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
