Marquee Matchups: Kentucky vs. Wisconsin

Breaking down the position-by-position matchups in Saturday’s national semifinal game between Kentucky and Wisconsin at the Final Four in Indianapolis:

POINT GUARD:
Andrew Harrison and Tyler Ulis (UK) vs. Bronson Koenig and Traevon Jackson(UW)
Both teams enter the matchup with a point guard who has Final Four experience, which is always a big plus when the stakes are so high. It has long been held that the backcourt – and point guards in particular – dictate who wins the national championship, and that could very well be the case again. Kentucky’s Harrison (9.8 ppg, 3.6 apg, 79% FT) is playing with the highest level of confidence and composure in his two years with the Wildcats, as evidenced by his clutch free throws to beat Notre Dame last week in the Elite 8. Koenig, also a sophomore, averages only 8.6 points per game, but UK saw how dangerous he can be when he tallied 11 in the first half alone of last year’s Final Four game. He’s a dangerous shooter when left unaccounted for, hitting at a 41 percent clip from beyond the arc, and he has added some nice scoring off the bounce to his game this year. As a floor general, he’s rock-solid with the ball in his hands, helping direct one of the nation’s most efficient offenses. Koenig has only 33 turnovers the entire season. The matchup between the starters looks like a wash, so Ulis (5.6 ppg, 3.6 apg, 42% 3PFG) and Jackson (8.6 ppg, a former starter recently back from a foot injury) could be the ones who decide this position battle. Jackson had 12 points in last year’s game.

SHOOTING GUARD:
Aaron Harrison and Devin Booker (UK) vs. Josh Gasser and Zak Showalter (UW)
Harrison (11.0 ppg) has established a reputation for being one of March Madness’s biggest clutch players after his trio of “dagger” 3-pointers in consecutive games against Louisville, Michigan and Wisconsin last year sent the Wildcats to the national championship game. He came up with yet another last week against Notre Dame, a deep 3 late in the game to help UK come from behind to the Fighting Irish. The twin brother of the UK point guard has not shot the ball as well as he had hoped this season (32% from beyond the arc) but has gone 12-for-26 (46%) since tournament play began. Kentucky also has one of the most dangerous shooters in the country coming off the bench behind him in freshman Booker (10.1 ppg, 41% 3PFG). The Badgers counter with Gasser (6.5 ppg, 3.4 rpg) who is referred to as “Capt. America” by his teammates for his do-it-all, hustling mindset. He’ll draw the defensive assignment on the opponent’s top guard and has a reputation for often making them a non-factor. This could be a very interesting matchup, especially if UK elects to use the size advantage of the 6-6 Harrison and Booker in attacking the basket. Showalter has only played about seven minutes a game for Wisconsin, but may be called upon to carry a bigger role to help offset UK’s superior depth. He’s described as another “energy guy” in the mold of Gasser.

SMALL FORWARD:
Trey Lyles (UK) vs. Sam Dekker (UW)
Arguably the best individual matchup of the entire Final Four featuring two of the most versatile players in the country. UK coach John Calipari refers to Lyles (8.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg) as his team’s “X-factor.” If the 6-10 freshman is going well, the Cats are extremely difficult to beat. He’s a “stretch 4” at the next level who has been trained as a 3 on UK’s deep roster, thanks to his strong ball-handling and passing skills, as well as a nice jumper out to the 3-point line. Meanwhile, Dekker (13.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg) was arguably the biggest star of the Elite 8 after making five of six 3-pointers en route to a 27-point performance against Arizona. The 6-9, 230-pound junior gives the Badgers another extremely dangerous scoring option, which prevents opponents from focusing the defensive gameplan squarely on All-American big man Frank Kaminsky. Last year, he had 15 points against the Cats. It will be interesting to see how Calipari approaches this matchup on the defensive end of the floor. He may opt to use athletic 7-footer Willie Cauley-Stein on Dekker to make his looks from the arc more difficult. That would require a likely rotation of Lyles and other bigs on Kaminsky. Neither team has a comparable option off the bench, so it's important that each stay out of foul trouble.

POWER FORWARD:
Karl-Anthony Towns and Marcus Lee (UK) vs. Nijel Hayes and Duje Dukan (UW)
Towns is coming off a career-high 25 points against Notre Dame in earning Midwest Region MVP honors. The 6-11 freshman has earned numerous All-American honors and has entered the discussion alongside Duke’s Jahlil Okafor as a possible No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft. Despite playing only 20.8 minutes per game for UK, Towns is averaging 10.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. He’s shooting 56 percent from the floor and 82 percent at the line. Defensively, he leads the Cats in blocked shots with 87, a considerable accomplishment playing alongside Cauley-Stein, one of the best rejection specialists in school history. Hayes (12.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg) was the Badgers’ sixth man last season, but has improved all facets of his game. In particular, he’s been much stronger on the glass. In last year’s national semifinal he had two points and no rebounds against the Cats, something he’s used as inspiration the entire season. He’ll be hungry for another crack at UK. The backups could also play roles in this one depending on how the game unfolds and any foul trouble either team runs into. Lee is a long, athletic defensive specialist who helped hold Kaminsky to eight points in last year’s matchup. The 6-9 Dukan is a more skilled offensive player who can step out and knock down the trey on occasion.

CENTER/FORWARD:
Willie Cauley-Stein and Dakari Johnson (UK) vs. Frank Kaminsky (UW)
Another marquee matchup that could likely determine who is playing for the national championship on Monday night. Cauley-Stein and Kaminsky are consensus first-team All-Americans, but completely different centers. The UK star averages just 9.1 points and 6.5 rebounds, but arguably has as big an impact on games as any player in America thanks to his defensive prowess. The athletic 7-footer often draws the defensive assignment on an opposing guard or wing as often as a fellow big man. Earlier this season, he become the first player in UK’s tradition-rich basketball history to record more than 200 blocked shots and 100 steals in a career. The Badgers counter with arguably the best offensive player in the country in Kaminsky, who is posting 18.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. They call the 7-foot junior “Frank The Tank,” but he’s not simply a low-block player. He’s mobile and dangerous beyond the 3-point arc. In his last outing, Kaminsky dominated Arizona for 29 points. He also figures to be extremely motivated after being held to eight points on 4-for-7 shooting in last year’s game against UK. This could be an epic showdown between a pair of NBA lottery picks. The good news for Big Blue is that Cauley-Stein has a skilled 7-footer Dakari Johnson (6.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg) coming off the bench, while the Badgers really don’t have a backup for Kaminsky. Should he encounter foul trouble (which is rare for the disciplined defender, 1.6 fouls per game) Wisconsin would likely be forced to go small with a guard-oriented lineup and be forced to find extra scoring from an unexpected source.
