Ten Tourney Takeaways

In this AllWildcats feature, contributing writer Jeremy Mattox touches on 10 takeaways from Kentucky's 2014-15 season and the tourney run that ended just shy of perfection.

No. 1 - It is really, really hard to win a national championship. Mike Kryzewski went to 4 Final Fours in 5 years in the late 80’s - early 90’s, just like John Calipari and Kentucky over the past 5 seasons. Kentucky and Calipari only cut down the nets one time in that stretch. Duke and Coach K. failed to win it all in their stretch. Similarly Duke had another run from 1993-2009 where more often than not they were a favorite to win a national championship and only managed to cut down the nets one time during that stretch (2001). So as much as it stings that Duke now has two titles during one of Kentucky’s greatest runs, the tournament is balancing itself out as Duke should have more than one title from 1993-2009.

No. 2 - Nothing broke Kentucky’s way in this tournament. After the first weekend of the tournament, not a single higher seeded team was left standing in the Midwest Region. It was a sign of things to come. In the region final, Kentucky drew Notre Dame, the team universally considered to be the second best team in the region. At the Final Four it faced Wisconsin and would have had to have played Duke to win the title. Those teams were widely considered two of the five best teams all season, with Wisconsin pegged as the worst matchup possible for Kentucky. In fact, it’s been quite a while since Kentucky has gotten a serious break in the tournament. Each of the last three seasons Kentucky has lost a starter (Noel, Cauley-Stein & Poythress) to season ending injury along the way. The bracket has yet to open up, i.e. littered with double digit seeds, for Kentucky under Calipari. At some point, that will surely even out.

No. 3 - The defense leveled off at the end of the season. In November and December, teams were just overwhelmed by Kentucky’s size and athleticism. In March and April, the scouting reports were much more robust and excellent coaching combined with the right personnel could effectively attack the Kentucky defense. Avoid Willie Cauley-Stein and create mismatches on the weaker links. The 2012 was a better defensive team despite what any analytics may indicate. That team had three elite, versatile defenders in Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Terrence Jones. I’ve heard it stated that Cauley-Stein is a better defender than Davis. That’s absurd. Cauley-Stein was asked to guard more positions than Davis because Kidd-Gilchrist or Jones could shut guys down on the perimeter allowing Davis to absolutely own the paint. I’m sure John Calipari would have preferred Cauley-Stein to enjoy a similar role, but there was no second elite defender on this team to allow for it.

No. 4 - Depth is overrated in the NCAA Tournament. More often than not a team with a 6.5 man rotation wins than a team with a 8-9 man rotation. The format of the tournament helps neutralize depth. There are a few things at work. First, it’s not quite the grind of a regular season of 8-9 games in four weeks. It’s two games per week, with at least four days rest between rounds. Obviously the ridiculous number of timeouts come into play as well and that’s an entire subject for another day. Finally, the officials are not going to foul star players out of big games anymore. It’s pretty much science. In the post-Jordan Era, star players get star calls, even in college. Willie Cauley-Stein gets a much better whistle than Dakari Johnson. Frank Kaminski gets the same kind of whistle for the Badgers.

No. 5 - I will never be a fan of taking the air out of the ball at the end of the game. In football, teams go into a prevent defense. I like to call this Kentucky’s prevent offense because it prevents scoring. If John Wall is your point guard, you can probably get away with this more often that not because he can create his own shot. If your primary offensive weapon is a back to the basket big man who needs to be set up by teammates, it can burn you. I know the post game comments by Cal were that he was not trying to stall or run clock. Maybe those were not his instructions Saturday night, but it had been this team’s (and every other Calipari team’s) M.O. all season. So perhaps they were not explicitly instructed to run clock, but that is what they instinctively did late and it cost them. Karl-Anthony Towns going back up with one of those late offensive rebounds and trying to score in the paint could not possibly have resulted in a less favorable outcome than a shot clock violation. I understand that this strategy works most of the season, but it is most likely to fail against elite competition and elite competition is exactly what is waiting in the later rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

No. 6 - An undefeated season is probably never going to happen for Kentucky or anyone else in college basketball under the current format. The best chance at actually pulling this off is putting together an elite team and keeping them together. That is just not going to happen. In 1975 Indiana went undefeated before falling to Kentucky in the region final. The next season Indiana was the undefeated national champion. Guess what, it was basically the same team from 1975. No one went pro early after the season. If no one went pro early from this Kentucky team, then yeah, they would have a great shot at finishing the job in 2016. That is not the world we live in and no one should expect broke college kids to turn down a guaranteed multi-million dollar contract for a slight chance at history. Thus, an undefeated season is likely to never happen again under the current college basketball landscape.

No. 7 - This was a successful season. The 2014-15 edition of the Kentucky Wildcats won a record tying 38 games, finished the regular season undefeated, won the SEC regular season championship, won the SEC Tournament Championship, reached the Final Four and was the center of the college basketball universe. There are approximately 100 previous Kentucky teams who don’t measure up to that resume. The season did not end with a national championship, but it also did not end short of the Final Four or in some fluke fashion.

No. 8 - Wisconsin is a great basketball team. Saturday’s game was Ali v. Frazier, not Tyson v. Buster Douglas. I would not go so far as to call it a coin flip, but if the teams played five games, the most likely outcome would be a 3-2 split for Kentucky. Unfortunately, the NCAA Tournament is a sudden-death format and no team was more motivated and more capable of knocking off Kentucky than Wisconsin. Wisconsin’s loss to Duke does nothing to diminish this fact. If Kentucky and Wisconsin were Ali and Frazier then Duke was George Foreman. These were three great teams, any of which could have easily walked out of Indy with the championship trophy.

No. 9 - It’s a sad commentary on the state of “professional” media when a certain segment of that group openly and gleefully basks in the aftermath of a great group of kids losing a college basketball game. I cannot imagine that there is a journalism class at Northwestern, Syracuse or even Missouri that would encourage that type of engagement with the subject matter of the story being covered. At least the fan bloggers of this era do not purport to be "objective" observers of the teams they cover. It was never fair to the players on the team that they wore the defacto “black hat” this season when, by all accounts, they were tremendous human beings.

No. 10 - The 2015-16 Kentucky basketball roster will look nothing like the 2014-15 Kentucky basketball roster and most everyone who claims to *know* what it will look like is likely throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Holding out hope for a mass holdover is a fool’s errand, but I would not be shocked by one or two guys electing to wear the blue and white one more year.
