Kentucky's Dustin Beggs allows two hits, fans 10 to lead Wildcats past San Diego State

Senior right-hander Dustin Beggs tossed a gem Saturday against San Diego State, allowing only two hits over eight shutout innings and striking out 10 in Kentucky's 6-0 win at the Tony Gwynn Classic.

Beggs (2-0) has allowed only one earned run in 14 innings pitched to start the season, sporting a 0.64 ERA.

Kentucky (3-2) had just four hits, but one of them was a big one in the form of a three-run homer by Riley Mahan to provide Beggs all the run support he would need. The sophomore shortstop also doubled and drew a walk, raising his season average to .438 with four extra-base hits among his seven hits.

Sophomore first baseman Evan White added a two-run double, while Zach Reks collected a single for UK.

With Beggs reaching a pitch limit after eight innings, UK turned to 6-foot-11 freshman righty Sean Hjelle to work a shutout ninth inning to close out the win.

San Diego State (1-6) starter Cody Thompson (0-2) suffered the loss in a quality start, allowing four runs – three earned – in six innings, walking four and striking out five.

Kentucky will return to action on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET against Bryant. The game will be broadcast live on the UK Sports Radio Network, with Dick Gabriel voicing the action. Fans in Lexington can hear the game live on 1580-AM and online at UKathletics.com.
