Kentucky Wildcats' Alex Poythress named Academic All-American

Kentucky senior Alex Poythress has earned the Wildcats' first Academic All-America honor since Mark Pope in 1995.

He became the 12th player in UK history to earn the honor, joining a list that includes Louie Dampier, Larry Conley, Dan Issel, Mike Pratt and Kyle Macy.

Poythress, a native of Clarksville, Tenn., graduated in just three years with a degree in business marketing. He earned a 3.517 undergraduate GPA and is now pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology and health promotion with an emphasis on sports leadership. He completed his first semester of grad school with a 4.0 GPA.

He has also been featured on the SEC Academic Honor Roll every year during his time at UK and has been named to the Athletic Director's honor roll three times, which honors the student-athlete with the highest GP on the team.

On the court, Poythress is averaging 9.9 points and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per game for the Wildcats, who play their regular season finale on Saturday at Rupp Arena against LSU.

Poythress is the 15th player in program history to amass more than 800 points, 500 rebounds and 70 blocked shots in his UK career.
