Kentucky Wildcats' Tyler Ulis named SEC Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year

Kentucky's Tyler Ulis has been named the SEC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in voting by the league's coaches.

The Wildcats' sophomore point guard was joined by UK freshman guard Jamal Murray on the first team. Together, the duo combined to average 40.8 points per game and helped lead UK to a share of its 47th SEC regular season title.

Alabama's Retin Obasohan, LSU's Ben Simmons, Ole Miss' Stefan Moody, South Carolina's Michael Carrera, Texas A&M's Jalen Jones and Vanderbilt's Damian Jones rounded out the first team.

Texas A&M's Billy Kennedy took Coach of the Year honors, while LSU's Simmons was named Freshman of the Year.

At 5-foot-9, Ulis is the shortest player in the history of the SEC Player of the Year award. He is the eighth Wildcat to earn the honor and the first since Anthony Davis in 2012. He is the program's fifth player to be selected as the league's top defender. Willie Cauley-Stein claimed that award last season.

Ulis and Davis are the only players in league history to win both the player of the year and defensive player of the year awards in the same season.

As a sophomore, Ulis is averaging 16.6 points, 7.4 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. He has eight double-doubles on the season, including a school-record three games with 20 points and 10 assists. No other player in the SEC had accomplished that many 20/10 games in the last 20 seasons.

With 21 more assists, Ulis can break John Wall's single-season assists record of 241.
