Nick Eicholtz outduels Kyle Cody as Alabama edges Kentucky Wildcats 2-1

Kentucky's path to a weekend sweep of Alabama ran into a roadblock Sunday in the form of Nick Eicholtz.

The Crimson Tide right-hander allowed only three hits through 7.2 dominant innings on the mound and Alabama's bullpen held on for a 2-1 win over the No. 13 Wildcats in the series finale at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

Eicholtz (2-1) walked only one batter and struck out three. Thomas Burrows earned his seventh save for the Tide by recording the final four outs of the game while working around a pair of UK hits. The Cats put the potential tying and go-ahead runners on base in the eighth inning, but JaVon Shelby's deep fly ball was caught against the left field wall on a windy day in Lexington that may have kept the ball in the park.

Chandler Avant had a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning that proved to be the game-winning run for Alabama (19-13, 6-6 SEC).

Kentucky (22-9, 8-4 SEC) got a strong start from senior right-hander Kyle Cody, who nearly matched Eicholtz pitch for pitch into the eighth inning. Cody (3-2) allowed only one earned run on four hits and two walks.

The Cats return to action on Tuesday, playing host to Eastern Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
