Vanderbilt's Sheffield dominates in complete-game win over Kentucky Wildcats

Vanderbilt's Jordan Sheffield tossed a complete game and struck out a career-high 14 Friday as the No. 12 Commodores opened a three-game series against No. 16 Kentucky with a 3-0 win in Nashville.

The Commodores' sophomore right-hander allowed only five hits, improving to 5-2 on the season.

Jeren Kendall went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead Vanderbilt (27-7, 8-5 SEC) at the plate. Connor Kaiser added two hits and drove in one for the Dores.

Kentucky (22-11, 8-5 SEC) got a second consecutive strong starting effort from Zack Brown(2-6), who allowed only three runs and struck out six over 6.2 innings. Vandy broke open a 1-0 game in the seventh with a pair of insurance runs.

Sophomore first baseman Evan White had a pair of doubles to lead UK at the plate.

The series will resume on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET at Charles Hawkins Field.
