Kentucky Wildcats reclaim top spot in basketball home attendance rankings

Kentucky has reclaimed the No. 1 position in the basketball home attendance rankings, the NCAA announced Wednesday.

The Wildcats averaged 23,361 fans per game during the 2015-16 season, beating out second-place Syracuse at 21,592. The Orange had ranked No. 1 in home attendance the previous two years, but UK took the top spot for the 18th time in the last 21 years.

Since Rupp Arena opened for the 1975-76 season, Kentucky has ranked first or second in home attendance every year.

The Cats have averaged more than 23,00 fans at Rupp Arena in six of John Calipari’s seven seasons as head coach.

A total of 694,871 fans watched the Wildcats play at home, on the road and in neutral sites in 2015-16, which ranked second in the country behind North Carolina. Syracuse, Maryland and Wisconsin rounded out the top five.

Kentucky set the NCAA record in 2013-14 with 922,653 total fans.

The SEC had the second-highest attendance among the 32 NCAA Division I conferences, ranking just behind the Big Ten. The ACC, Big 12 and Big East ranked 3, 4 and 5.

Three SEC programs ranked among the top five schools with the largest attendance increase in 2015-16: Alabama, LSU, and Vanderbilt.
