Kentucky Wildcats add Toledo to future football schedule

Kentucky will open the 2019 football season with the first matchup in program history against Toledo.

The official athletics site for Toledo announced Thursday that the school has reached an agreement to play the Wildcats on Aug. 31, 2019, at Commonwealth Stadium.

"We are very pleased to add Kentucky to our football schedule in 2019," said Toledo Athletics Director Mike O'Brien. "It will be an exciting opportunity for our team to face off against a team from the SEC. Also, with Lexington less than five hours away, our fans and students will be able to attend the game and cheer on their Rockets."

Toledo has played four previous games against SEC programs, including a 16-12 upset of No. 18 Arkansas last season in Little Rock.

It's a solid challenge for the Wildcats, who recruit heavily in northern Ohio. The Rockets have fielded one of the top programs in the MAC for several years, going 9-4, 9-4, 7-5, 9-4 and 10-2 since 2011. They have appeared in bowl games in five of the last six seasons.

UK also has a 2019 road matchup in place against the MAC's Eastern Michigan as part of a three-game contract.
