Kentucky Wildcats' Malik Monk named SEC Freshman of The Week

Kentucky has opened the season with back to back SEC Freshman of the Week honors.

After scoring a career-high 23 points in the Wildcats' 69-48 win over Michigan State, Malik Monk was honored by the league office on Monday. The shooting guard from Bentonville, Ark., went 7-of-11 from 3-point range in the victory over the Spartans at Madison Square Garden. He became one of only three freshmen in program history to tally seven or more treys in a regular-season game.

Monk followed that performance with 14 points on Sunday night in the Cats' 93-59 win over Duquesne.

Sebastian Saiz of Ole Miss was the SEC Player of the Week. The senior forward from Spain averaged 19.7 points and 12.3 rebounds in wins over UMass, Oral Roberts and Saint Joseph's last week. He had 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds against UMass.

Last week, UK point guard De'Aaron Fox was the SEC Freshman of the Week.

The newly ranked No. 1 Wildcats (4-0) will return to action with a 1 p.m. ET game against Cleveland State on Wednesday in Rupp Arena. The game will air live on the SEC Network.
