Florida defensive end Chris Whittaker commits to Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky's big recruiting weekend yielded a commitment Sunday night when a talented defensive end prospect from the Sunshine State flipped his verbal from Central Florida to the Wildcats.

Chris Whittaker, a three-star prospect from Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade Prep, is rated No. 11 at his position in talent-rich Florida and No. 26 in the South. He capped his senior year with 10.5 sacks.

His offer sheet included programs like Georgia, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, among many others.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Whittaker made his official visit with the Cats this weekend. He is a teammate of fellow UK commitment Joshua Ali, a wide receiver.

Kentucky currently has 15 verbal commitments in the Class of 2017. Whittaker is the third defensive end, a key position for the Cats in this class. He is a prime candidate to play UK's hybrid end/linebacker position.

Whittaker is one junior defender in the trenches that passes the eye test with his physical makeup at 6-foot-3.5, 245 pounds. Whittaker is a strong young man that provides a thud at the point of attack, and really does a nice job of setting the edge and playing with discipline. His motor and ability to pursue the ball from the backside catches your attention as well. Finding some go-to moves and working on his burst off the line should be areas of improvement moving forward.
