Kentucky Wildcats' Malik Monk wins Jerry West Award

Award presented to nation's top shooting guard.

Kentucky's Malik Monk has added yet another honor to a long list of accolades earned during his freshman year with the Wildcats.

Monk was on Friday announced as the 2017 Jerry West Shooting Guard of The Year presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

One of the most prolific scorers in UK Basketball history, Monk averaged 19.8 points per game in helping lead the Cats to a 32-6 record and the Elite Eight. The Arkansas native is the first player in program history to win the award, joining Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell and Oklahoma's Buddy Heild as the first two winners.

Monk edged finalists Marcus Foster (Creighton), Luke Kennard (Duke), Peter Jok (Iowa) and Bryce Alford (UCLA) to win the award, which is named after the former West Virginia University All-American and NBA standout.

Monk's 754 points were the most by a freshman in UK Basketball history and ranks fourth among all classes behind only Dan Issel (948, 1970), Jodie Meeks (854, 2009) and Jamal Mashburn (767, 1992). His season was highlighted by a 47-point game against North Carolina and a 37-point game against Georgia in which he pumped in 30 points in the second half.

He made 104 3-pointers on the season, just behind Jodie Meeks’ school record of 117.
