BBD RECRUITING: Top Georgia star likes Cats

Forward Corey Gibbs has emerged as a peach of a recruit for 2003...

Gibbs Has Many Suitors

Corey Gibbs, a 6-7, 225 pound forward from Atlanta (GA) Pace Academy, made an impression on a lot of people during his week at Nike Camp. He hit medium-range jumpers, attacked the glass and used his explosion off the ground to make his presence felt. He appeared hungry and that translates well with college recruiters.

"I think I did pretty well even with all the camps I played a lot of basketball and wore my body down," Gibbs said.

During the early evaluation period numerous colleges rolled through to take a look at him. Kentucky, Cincinnati, Georgia, North Carolina, Miami, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Florida, Furman and Florida State spent time watching him workout. Bob Huggins made a personal appearance to represent the Bearcats.

The attention didn't catch Gibbs off guard. He was ready for it. "I had a lot of guys telling me to look forward to it because it was going to be coming my junior year," Gibbs said. "My first time [having coaches around] I was kind of nervous."

So far, he's made unofficial visits to Georgia and Cincinnati. He says that trips to North Carolina, Miami and Florida State are likely to happen during his junior year.

Last season, Gibbs averaged 21 points and says he pulled down 15 boards a game. He's being recruited as a combo forward. He'll play next spring and summer with Linzy Davis and Team Georgia Elite.

Gibbs has seen a lot of big time players come through the state of Georgia but one of them really left an impression on him. "The person I really like is Rashaad Carruth from Kentucky. I love his game." Wait a minute, Carruth is a shooting guard. "I know, I just love the way he plays. Hard and with ease. He can score anytime he wants to."

And so can Corey.
