SEC Media Day: Cats picked to win title

Led by superstar Tayshaun Prince, the Kentucky Wildcats are the near unanimous preseason pick to win the 2002 SEC championship...

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Kentucky's Tayshaun Prince was tabbed the preason Player of the Year, and the Wildcats were the near unanimous choice to win the league title in voting at Thursday's Southeastern Conference Basketball Media Day.

Kentucky received 20 of 23 first-place votes with Florida garnering the other three tallies for the league's top spot. Alabama was the top pick in the SEC West with 15 first-place votes. Arkansas was next with five first-place votes, and Ole Miss received two.

Prince, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, is expected to repeat as the SEC Player of the Year. As a junior, the Compton, Calif., native won the award by averaging 16.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

He was joined on the first-team ballot by teammate Keith Bogans and Florida's Brett Nelson at guard, Alabama's Rod Grizzard at forward and Florida's Udonis Haslem at center.
