Cats Finish Round 1 in Top 5

Brian Craig knows it's not going to be easy to get back to the NCAA Championship, without some luck. Without the services of All-SEC sophomore Matt Kohn and the continued struggles from John Holmes, the third year coach knew he needed someone to step up.

Better late then never, here comes Brandon Waldrop, to do just that. The junior from St. Xavier high school led an inspiring effort from the 22nd-ranked Wildcats, as they posted a Day 1 score of 298. The score was good enough for 5th place and gave Kentucky a good starting point for the rest of the tournament. Waldrop, shot an up-and-down round of 70, in which the Louisville native had two eagles and one double bogey. He was not alone. The always dependable John Holmes brought in a 1 over par, 73, to help balance the 7 over par and 4 over par brought in by Mark Blakefield and Matt Wells, respectively. For the Cats, it was a good start for the rest of the tournament, as they showed no signs of slowing down without Matt Kohn. The sophomore from Florida was ruled academically ineligible just weeks ago and has left Kentucky searching for a valid replacement. Tyler Wilson took his spot in the order, Thursday, and struggled in a bogey-plagued 81. The Cats are looking to continue to hold steady and stay above the mark needed to advance to the Championships, for the second straight year. Stay tuned to IK for the latest developments.
