Grinter chooses Cardinals

Kentucky recieved a huge blow to their summer recruiting efforts when Fairdale High School's Maurice Grinter chose the Cardinals over UK, Friday.

The commitment from Grinter is the second big pick-up for the state rival in a week.

"(U of L) feels his talent and athletic ability will be needed to compete in the Big East Conference," Fairdale football coach Mike Gossett told the Courier-Journal.

Louisville's willingness to let Grinter walk-on Rick Pitino's basketball team, eventually became the deciding factor for the senior-to-be.

"When coach Pitino offered Maurice the opportunity to walk on as a basketball player, that closed the deal for his decision to become a Cardinal," Fairdale basketball coach Lloyd Gardner said.

"When they wanted me to play both, it was really exciting for me," Grinter said. "I am truly excited and am looking forward to having the opportunity to play and develop my athletic skills for two of the best coaches in America."

Kentucky was hoping to move Grinter to linebacker and let him develop into his body. Louisville, on the other hand, recruited Grinter to play wide reciever at the next level.

"Maurice is one of the finest athletes to ever play at Fairdale High School," Coach Gossett concluded.

"Coach Gardner and I both agree that Maurice is a very special player, and the University of Louisville should be excited to get a player of his magnitude and ability," Gossett said. "He has been able to play a variety of positions and has excelled at each."

Grinter chose Louisville over an offer from Kentucky and interest from Purdue, Cincinnati, and Arkansas.
