Among the noticeably absent group that did not attend Sunday's photo-shoot at the Nutter Fieldhouse in Lexington were Louisville natives Maurice Urrutia, Maurice Grinter, and Alfonso Smith. All three players were good enough to garner early offers from the state's two premier universities, but were apparently not good enough to be placed on the squad.
Urrutia appears to be the biggest snub of the group from Jefferson County.
Often over-shadowed at Fern Creek last season by his older brother Mario, the younger Urrutia was listed in the initial Insiders.com South Hot 100, released to the public last week. At 6'4, Urrutia's size and speed make him one of the state's premier players, drawing interest from across the country.
His rejection left much to be desired on the team; as did the apparent neglect of Maurice Grinter, a Louisville commitment from Fairdale High School.
Perhaps Jefferson County's best athlete, Grinter was one of the first players (if not the first) to get a scholarship from Rich Brooks and the staff for the class of 2005. His outstanding play in which he accounted for 1200 yards in his only 5 games at running back last season was obviously overlooked by the many coaches that voted.
Waggener High School product Alfonso Smith was also snubbed from the team.
Despite holding two scholarship offers from major division 1 schools (Indiana and UK), Smith was not chosen because of the flood of running backs already on the squad.
Nothing, however, compares to the snubbing of Mike Donoghue, a 6'3 295 pound offensive line prospect from Covington Catholic High School in Northern Kentucky.
Already offered by UofL and UK, with an offer from Tennessee pending, Donoghue is considered the second best linemen in the state behind Cory Zirbel. Instead of basking in the glory of participating in the events, the CovCath senior-to-be was nowhere to be found on Sunday or on the roster sheet released to the public, Monday.
