Illinois 3-star QB could be future target of staff

Although they haven't made any recent contact, the Cats could become involved with 3-star quarterback Freddie Barnes, whom would be the real steal of the Midwest.

Flossmoor (Ill.) Homewood-Flossmoor quarterback Freddie Barnes is one of the top quarterback prospects in the Midwest but he has had a hard time finding his rhythm in 2004.

Freddie informed us last night that things have been going much better the past few games and he even received his first scholarship offer.

"I received a scholarship offer from Eastern Michigan," said the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Barnes.

"Eastern Michigan runs an offense that suits my skills. The coaches at Eastern (Michigan) came from Northwestern and they run a spread offense where I would get the option to run or pass.

"Northwestern, Indiana, Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) are calling me on a weekly basis.

"My favorites are Northwestern, Indiana, Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Michigan. I'm working on setting up with an official visit with Eastern Michigan."

"I camped at Kentucky and Northwestern this summer," Barnes said. "I really like Northwestern a lot. Their offense is suited for my game and we're putting a lot of their offense in at my high school this year.

"I also like Kentucky. Another school that's high on my list is Indiana. Indiana is rebuilding right now but they should be on track by the time I get there.

"As a team, we're just not throwing the ball as much this year as we did last year," Barnes said.

"When we do throw the ball, we're having a hard time holding onto it. I've had three touchdown passes dropped on me in the end zone. We're getting better though. Our goal is to make the play-offs."
